*Learn how to buy Gold
Jewelry* Whether you're looking
for traditional wedding bands, a chain,
a pair of stunning earrings or a striking
broach, you can't go wrong with gold.
Here are some things to look for to be
sure you're getting your money's
worth. Want to buy GOLD
JEWELRY?
1. Choose a reputable jeweler. Select
one that has membership in Jewelers
of America if possible. 2. Familiarize
yourself with karat quality marks. Since
gold is a soft metal, it is mixed with
other metals to make it more durable.
The karat mark will tell you what
percentage of the metal is actually
gold. 3. Look for a trademark on the
item you wish to purchase. This
identifies the manufacturer of the
jewelry. If you have trouble figuring out
what the trademark means, ask the
jeweler. All gold jewelry with a karat
mark must also have a trademark.

4. Be sure that any diamonds or
gemstones that appear in the item you
are considering are also real. 5.
Bear in mind that the price will include
the amount of gold in the piece, as well
as the design and the craftsmanship.
6. Make sure your sales receipt lists
the karat quality of the item purchased.
Anything less than 10 karat gold
cannot be legally marketed as gold in
the U.S. 24K gold is pure gold, which
is generally not practical for wearing,
as it is too soft; 18K gold is 75 percent
gold; 12K gold is 50 percent gold; 10K
gold is 41.7 percent gold. Most gold
items are marked with a karat mark,
even though it is not required by law.
European quality marks are numbers
that indicate the purity of the item. 999
means the gold is 99.9 percent (or
24K) gold; 750 means it is 75 percent
(or 18K) gold; 585 means it is 58.5
percent (or 14K) gold. The different
colors of gold (white gold, rose gold,
etc.) have to do with the metals with
which the pure gold is combined.

Gold jewelry never goes out of style,
and for good reason, because gold is
as wearer-friendly as it is beautiful.
Pure gold doesn't react with other
elements to create tarnish, the residue
that accumulates on some metals
before transferring to your skin as a
stain. Sometimes people have allergy
or staining problems with metals that
are combined with gold, but the gold
itself is rarely a problem. Want to

Gold can be worked into nearly any
shape, from tiny strands that do not
break easily to very thin sheets. One
ounce of gold can even be hammered
into an ultra thin sheet that's ten feet
square. Gold can be manipulated
nearly any way the artisan desires.
How Pure Is Your Gold Jewelry?
Chances are the ring on your finger is
marked 18K, 14K, or 10K, with the K
standing for karat, the system used to
describe the percentage of pure gold
an item contains. The higher the karat
number, the higher the percentage of
gold in your gold jewelry. Want to
buy GOLD JEWELRY?
· 24K gold is pure gold.
· 18K gold contains 18 parts gold
and 6 parts of one or more additional
metals, making it 75% gold.
· 14K gold contains 14 parts gold
and 10 parts of one or more additional
metals, making it 58.3% gold.
· 12K gold contains 12 parts gold
and 12 parts of one or more additional
metals, making it 50% gold.
· 10K gold contains 10 parts gold
and 14 parts of one or more additional
metals, making it 41.7% gold. 10K gold
is the minimum karat that can be called
"gold" in the United States.
European Markings
European gold jewelry is marked with
numbers that indicate their percentage
of gold, such as:
· 18K gold is marked 750 to
indicate 75% gold
· 14K gold is marked 585 for
58.5%
· 12K gold is marked 417 for
41.7%
Other Markings on Gold Jewelry
The karat marking on your gold jewelry
should be accompanied by a hallmark
or trademark that identifies its maker.
The item's country of origin might also
be included.
Why Are Other Metals Mixed With
Gold?
You'll find examples of pure gold
jewelry, but pure gold is soft and isn't
practical for daily wear. Other metals
are mixed with it to make it more
durable (and to lower its cost). Want
to buy GOLD JEWELRY?
Adding other metals to the mix also
allows metallurgists to change the
color of gold. Palladium or nickel can
be added to create white gold. Adding
copper produces a rose or pink tint,
while silver gives gold a greenish cast.
When metals are added to the gold the
result is an alloy, a blended mixture of
the metals that you can think of as a
very expensive cake batter. Solid gold
is a term that can be used to describe
an item that's at least 10K (in the US)
gold all the way through. Even though
it's a gold alloy--18K, 14K, or anything
down to 10K--it can be called solid
gold. Want to buy GOLD JEWELRY?
When Gold Is Used as a Coating
There are many ways to mechanically
apply a coating of gold onto a much
less expensive metal, reducing the
item's cost. The thicker the layer of
gold, the less likely it is to wear away
easily and expose the metal
underneath.
Gold Filled Jewelry
Newer gold filled items have markings
that indicate how much and what type
of gold was used for the layer. A
marking that says 1/20 12K G.F.
means that the jewelry is at least
1/20th 12K gold by weight. Want to

Gold Plated Jewelry
The gold layer in gold plated jewelry is
typically thinner than the gold in gold
filled jewelry, so it usually wears away
more quickly. Plating is done in
different ways.
You might see terms such as gold
washed used to describe a very thin
layer of gold--one that won't be very
durable.
So What Should You Buy?
Solid gold is durable, so it is a better
choice for jewelry you'll wear regularly.
If you have allergies to nickel or other
metals, choose items that have high
gold content, such as 18K or 22K gold
jewelry.
Gold filled or plated jewelry is suitable
for jewelry that you wear occasionally.
Everyday use would eventually
diminish the gold layer, exposing the
metal below, which might stain your
skin or cause an allergic reaction.

History
Gold is a highly prized precious metal
that for millennia has been used as
money, a store of value and in jewelry.

Gold is a metallic element with a
characteristic yellow color, but can also
be black or ruby when finely divided.
When selling it in the form of jewelry,
gold is measured in karats (k), with
pure gold being 24k. However, it is
more commonly sold in lower
measurements of 22k, 18k, and 14k. A
lower "k" indicates a higher percent of
copper or silver mixed into the alloy,
with copper being the more commonly
used metal between the two. Want to

Fourteen karat gold-copper alloy will
be nearly identical in color to certain
bronze alloys, and both may be used
to produce police and other badges.
Want to buy GOLD JEWELRY?
Eighteen karat gold with a high copper
content is found in some antique
jewelry and will have a distinct, though
not dominant copper cast, giving an
attractively warm color. A similar karat
weight when alloyed with silvery metals
will appear less warm in color, and
some low karat white metal alloys may
be sold as "white gold", silvery in
appearance with a sightly yellow cast
but far more resistant to corrosion than
silver or sterling silver. Want to

Karat weights of twenty and higher are
more common in modern jewelry. Gold
can be made into thread and used in
embroidery. Want to buy GOLD

*Learn about GOLD Facts &
the History of GOLD*
Gold has been known and highly valued
since prehistoric times. It may have been
the first metal used by humans and was
valued for ornamentation and rituals.
Egyptian hieroglyphs from as early as 2600
BCE describe gold, which king Tushratta of
the Mitanni claimed was as "common as
dust" in Egypt. Egypt and Nubia had the
resources to make them major gold-
producing areas for much of history. Gold is
also mentioned several times in the Old
Testament. Want to buy GOLD JEWELRY?
The south-east corner of the Black
Sea was famed for its gold.
Exploitation is said to date from
the time of Midas, and this gold
was important in the establishment
of what is probably the world's
earliest coinage in Lydia between
643 and 630 BCE.
The European exploration of the Americas
was fueled in no small part by reports of
the gold ornaments displayed in great
profusion by Native American peoples,
especially in Central America, Peru, and
Colombia. Want to buy GOLD

Gold has long been considered one of the
most precious metals, and its value has
been used as the standard for many
currencies (known as the gold standard) in
history. Gold has been used as a symbol for
purity, value, royalty, and particularly roles
that combine these properties (see gold
album). Gold as a sign of wealth and
prestige was made fun of by Thomas More
in his treatise Utopia. On that imaginary
island, gold is so abundant that it is used to
make chains for slaves, tableware and
lavatory-seats. When ambassadors from
other countries arrive, dressed in
ostentatious gold jewels and badges, the
Utopians mistake them for menial servants,
paying homage instead to the most
modestly-dressed of their party.

There is an age-old tradition of biting gold in
order to test its authenticity. Although this
is certainly not a professional way of
examining gold, the bite test should score
the gold because gold is considered a soft
metal according to the Mohs' scale of
mineral hardness. The purer the gold the
easier it should be to mark it. Painted lead
can cheat this test because lead is softer
than gold.
Gold in antiquity was relatively easy to
obtain geologically; however, 75% of all gold
ever produced has been extracted since
1910.[2] It has been estimated that all the
gold in the world that has ever been refined
would form a single cube 20 m (66 ft) a side
(8000 m³). Want to buy GOLD

The primary goal of the alchemists
was to produce gold from other
substances, such as lead —
presumably by the interaction with
a mythical substance called the
philosopher's stone. Although they
never succeeded in this attempt,
the alchemists promoted an
interest in what can be done with
substances, and this laid a
foundation for today's chemistry.
Their symbol for gold was the
circle with a point at its center (☉),
which was also the astrological
symbol, the Egyptian hieroglyph
and the ancient Chinese character
for the Sun (now 日). For modern
attempts to produce artificial gold,
see gold synthesis.

During the 19th century, gold
rushes occurred whenever large
gold deposits were discovered,
including the California, Colorado,
Otago, Australian, Witwatersrand,
Black Hills, and Klondike gold
rushes. · Gold performs critical
functions in computers,
communications equipment,
spacecraft, jet aircraft engines,
and a host of other products. Gold
is used in restorative dentistry
especially in tooth restorations
such as crowns and permanent
bridges as its slight maliablity
makes a superior molar mating
surface to other teeth, unlike a
harder ceramic crown. Use of gold
crowns in more prominent teeth
such as incisors is favored in
some cultures and discouraged in
others Since the 1880s, South
Africa has been the source for a
large proportion of the world’s
gold supply. Production in 1970
accounted for 79% of the world
supply, producing about 1,000
tonnes. However, production in
2004 was 342 tonnes. This decline
was due to the increasing difficulty
of extraction and changing
economic factors affecting the
industry in South Africa.

The city of Johannesburg was built
atop the world's greatest gold
finds. Gold fields in the Orange
Free State and the Transvaal are
deep and require the world's
deepest mines. The Second Boer
War of 1899–1901 between the
British Empire and the white Boers
was at least partly over the rights
of miners and possession of the
gold wealth in South Africa.

Other major producers are Canada, United
States and Western Australia. Mines in
South Dakota and Nevada supply two-thirds
of gold used in the United States. Siberian
regions of Russia also used to be
significant in the global gold mining
industry. Kolar Gold Fields in India is
another example of a city being built on the
greatest gold deposits in India. Because of
its historically high value, much of the gold
mined throughout history is still in
circulation in one form or another.
