THE COMPLETE DESKTOP COMPUTER
PC GUIDE!
A desktop is a personal computer that will fit
on a desk.  They are suitable in home, office
and school work environments. They are not
usually portable and often consist of a
separate desktop monitor and a box for the
processor and hard drive. The CPU
processor (or CPU) is the brain of the
computer PC, controlling all aspects of the
desktop computer PC. Processors are made
up of millions of tiny transistors that can
process huge numbers of instructions per
second. The speed of a desktop PC
processor is measured in Gigahertz (GHz)
and Megahertz (Mhz) and faster the
processors the better it can handle the
things you ask it to do.

Desktop Computer PC Memory is temporary
storage used by programs and files currently
running on your computer. Memory is known
as RAM, or Random Access Memory, and
needs power to be able to store information.
So, when your computer is switched off, the
information is forgotten about. Memory or
RAM is not to be confused with your hard
drive; that's permanent storage for programs
and files. Memory is measured in Megabytes
(MB) and Gigabytes (GB). Desktop
computers generally offer more hard drive
space than laptops. The size of your hard
drive is important if you want to save lots of
music and videos. A hard disk drive is a
device that uses rapidly spinning metal
platters to store large amounts of data and
programs. Hard disk storage is slower than
the random access memory (RAM) in which
programs are actually run, but has a much
higher capacity, usually measured in
gigabytes or GB (billions of bytes of data).
Features to look for include size (bigger is
better), rotational speed (faster is better), and
type of interface. In addition to hard and
floppy disks drives, desktop computers
usually come with at least one optical drive.
This might be a read-only device, such as a
standard CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, or a
rewriteable drive, such as a CD-RW, DVD-
RAM, or DVD-RW drive. Rewriteable drives
let you store your files on discs, even burn
your own music CDs and movies. Optical
drives are the tray drives in the front or side
of a computer, similar to those found on your
stereo or DVD player. These drives also
allow you to load and install software and
write (or "burn") data to a disc. Optical drives
come in many formats:

·        CD-ROM - only reads CDs
·        CD-RW - Record and play CDs
·        DVD-ROM - reads CDs and DVD movies
·        DVD RW - Record and play CDs and
DVD movies
·        DVD Dual Layer - Loads double DVD
movies

An operating system is what allows you to
use applications and generally access all of
the information you have on your computer.
By far the most popular operating system in
the world is Microsoft Windows, the most
recent of which is Microsoft Windows Vista
and Windows  XP. Desktop Computer PCs
differ in price and performance depending on
what they're used for. For example, there is
no point spending thousands on a state-of-
the-art gaming computer if you only use it for
occasional Internet browsing and word-
processing. Desktops can be separated into
five categories:
