THE TOP CLASSIC DESIGNER
HANDBAGS
The Birkin bag by Herm¨¨s
The No 1 'it bag' of all time, this is the holy grail of all
handbags. Its iconic status means that the waiting list
for this bag is currently so long that it has been closed.
So no need to beat yourself up about the fact that you
can't afford one because you couldn't get one anyway.
If you are ever lucky enough to become a member of
the Birkin club, you'll be safe in the knowledge that this
bag will never date and will still look cool in 40 years'
time when you pass it on to your granddaughter.

The Muse by YSL. Designer Handbag
Even though it's been around for a couple of seasons
now, the YSL Muse is THE bag for winter. Since its
appearance last year on the arms of a multitude of
celebrities, the initial buzz has died down, but we
predict this is the bag the real fashionistas will be
sporting this season. Want to buy a Designer

The Classic from Chanel
If you like to think of yourself as a bit of a bag expert,
then you really need to know about this bag. The 2.55
from Chanel was first introduced in February 1955
(hence the 2.55) by the ever practical Coco Chanel,
who wanted a hands-free bag with a shoulder strap.
To celebrate its 60th birthday, Chanel re introduced
the 2.55 last year with a special stamp inside. This
year it's available as the 'Classic' (without the stamp)
and will set you back ?860. But you can tell your bank
manager that this bag is a collectable and an
investment for your future. In fact, this bag is your
pension, so you'd be mad not to buy it.

The Fendi B
We're still in love with the Fendi B - a year after its
launch - and it's growing on us more and more every
day. Even though it's been spotted swinging on the
arm of a WAG or two, don't let that put you off. This
bag is super stylish and set to become a future classic.

Marc Jacobs Stam
One of the biggest sellers this year, the quilted leather
Stam comes in grey and patent for winter. It combines
high fashion status with a down-town street sensibility
in a way that only Marc Jacobs can do. When all the
fuss about quilting, chains and Chanel-ism's has died
down, you may have to put this one into store. But, like
everything else by 'grunge god' Jacobs, we predict
that in less than a decade you'll be able to smugly
resurrect this future heirloom as 'vintage Jacobs'.

The Paddington by Chlo?
One of the world's most (badly) copied bags, we are
amazed that the Paddington is still one of the biggest
sellers in the land. Perhaps it's because of its
reasonable price tag. When many Chlo¨¦ bags are
priced at around $1700, this one seems like a steal. In
fact it's so cheap you may even throw caution to the
wind and yell 'I'll take two!' Unfortunately, demand is
still so high that on net-a-porter, sales are restricted to
one per customer. Want to buy a Designer Handbag?

The Novak by Alexander McQueen
Tired of pushy commuters crushing your slouchy Joni
bag on the tube? Then look to McQueen for the
answer. Never one to run with the tide, McQueen
introduced us to the steely Novak last winter. In a sea
of slouchy hobo style bags, it was definitely a welcome
alternative. This winter, as fashion finds its new
direction in sober tough girl looks, expect it to come
into its own as the perfect bag for urban warriors
everywhere. Want to buy a Designer Handbag?
The Bayswater by Mulberry
Mulberry call the Bayswater their 'all rounder'. This is
their most covetable classic and a big hit with
celebrities like Kate Moss, who's often seen shopping
with her version in black. This season it comes in
sheepskin and super luxe python.

The Gaucho by Dior
Popularised by celebrities like Paris Hilton, the Gaucho
is the bag on every fashion wannabee's wish list. Why
this style is so popular we cannot fathom, but promo
girls and Russian pop stars seem to be falling over
themselves to part with a grand for it. Want to buy a

THE TOP NEW SEASON BAGS
The Emmy from Mulberry
We know Kate Moss changes her handbag as often as
she changes her men and never seems to fully commit
to one, but this season she seems quite taken by the
new 'it bag' offering from Mulberry - the Emmy. Want to

Kansas by Lanvin
Since Alber Elbaz took the reins at Lanvin, this has
become a brand that can do no wrong. Like the
clothes, Lanvin accessories are beautifully crafted with
great attention paid to even the smallest details. This
is fashion for the real avant garde, so if you want to
buy a bag that's not going to end up splashed all over
the cover of Heat magazine, then invest wisely in a
Kansas.
The Tracy by Chlo¨¦
An 'it bag' called Tracy? Whatever next?
We know fashion sometimes has to be ironic to be
cool, but this is surely taking things too far? Names
aside, we love this new bag from Chlo¨¦. It's big
enough, the straps aren't silly and it combines two of
winter's most popular colours. Just try not to worry
about who exactly it's named after. Want to buy a

Palazzo by Fendi

Just like last year's Fendi B, we suspect the Palazzo
will take a little time to grow on us. Its new bucket
shape is big news for bags this season and seems to
be the only real alternative to the oversize theme.
Ladybird by Stella McCartney
Stella McCartney's Ladybird is the only designer bag
option that lets you be stylish, ethical and kind to
animals all at the same time. It's made from vinyl and is
sold in her wind-powered London store. So if you like
your moral compass to always point to 'holy-ier than
thou', then leave the Silverados to the sinners and buy
this super-sized bag next season. Want to buy a

Chlo? Tekla
The Tekla is Chlo¨¦'s latest response to the super-
sized trend, and for autumn 06 this bag ticks more
than one box for us. It's shiny, it's black, it's got
pockets, studs and zips. And it's huge - what's not to
like?
Chanel shoulder pouch
Proving that this brand isn't always about quilting and
tweed is the Chanel shoulder pouch bag in aged calf
skin. The look of Chanel today is about mixing old
ideas with young street style and this bag, with its
signature chain straps and soft slo uchy shape, does
the job perfectly. Want to buy a Designer Handbag?

Prada Shopper
Just when you thought that big bags couldn't get any
bigger along comes Prada with its super-sized
shopper. Madonna's already inseparable from hers
and uses it to cart around her yoga mat and water...
well you didn't think she used it for the weekly shop
now did you? Want to buy a Designer Handbag?

Azzedine Alaia
Gloss is one of this seasons strongest trends for
accessories. Couple this with the fact that Azzedine
Alaia is enjoying a revival and is once again one of the
hottest brands around and you have the perfect bag
for Autumn

Juicy Couture
Previously known for their velour track suits, Juicy
Couture have managed to shrug off any past 'chav'
associations to become a big name in the war of the 'it
bags'. For winter, check out their multi-pocketed totes
with equestrian-inspired tarnished brass buckles and
insignias

Corto Moltedo
Gabriele Corto Moltedo is the talented son of the
founders of luxury brand Bottega Veneta. He launched
his own line in 2004 and combines high glamour with
soft shapes and fun details like charms and tassles.
Not suprisingly, he already has a following that
includes stylish celebrities like Jade Jagger, Dita Von
Teese and Liberty Ross, which is proof enough to us
that Corto Moltedo is definately one to watch. Want to

How to choose the right Designer Handbag?

You probably don't give handbags the same scrutiny
you give a pair of jeans: if a handbag is cute or fits your
lifestyle then it works.

But did you know that a handbag can flatter your shape
almost as much as the right pair of jeans?

Apply these easy steps to getting bag in proportion to
your figure. It can not only knock off pounds visually (no
kidding!), it'll polish up your style in a flash.

Shapes
Try to choose a shape that is the opposite of your body
type. If you are tall and thin, look for a slouchy, rounded
hobo bag to compliment your figure. If you're short and
voluptous, play off opposites by choosing a handbag
that is tall and rectangular or long and sleek (like a
clutch).
Want to buy a Designer Handbag?

In general, the rounder your figure, the more structured
your bag should be. That doesn't mean that you have
to carry a hard box around to counterbalance your
womanly shape: rectangular or square silhouettes in
soft leathers or fabrics will do the trick. Want to buy a

Some popular shapes:
ˇ¤        Tote - An open-top bag with straps or
          handles.
ˇ¤           Hobo bag - A crescent-shaped
            shoulder bag.
ˇ¤           Duffle - Tall shoulderbag, often with a
             wider opening on top.
ˇ¤           Field bag - A flap-top shoulderbag with
             utility-type closure (buckles, snaps, etc).
ˇ¤           Clutch - A small, handheld bag
            (frequently used for evening wear).
ˇ¤           Satchel- A large, handheld bag.
ˇ¤           Baguette - Long and rounded shoulder
            bag resembling the namesake bread.
ˇ¤           Messenger - A large, soft shoulder bag
with long straps (often worn across the
             body).
ˇ¤           Cigar Box - A small, boxy, hard bag.
ˇ¤           Pouch - A soft, small bag.
ˇ¤           Kelly bag - A classic Hermes style
             named after            Grace Kelly; a
             large, structured handbag with
             distinctive hardware closures.

Scale
While the shape should oppose your body type for
maximum flattery, the size of the bag should be in
proportion to your figure.
Think scale here: a woman who is 6 feet tall and a size
14 would look lost with a teensy hand-held bag. A petite
size 0 would look overwhelmed by an enormous slouchy
bag. Want to buy a Designer Handbag?

In recent years, styles have become smaller and on
very short straps which make the bag fit right under the
arm at breast level.
Close-fitting bags are a great look if you're svelte and
want to show off cleavage; not so great if your arms and
bust are too large.
How to tell if a shoulder bag is right for you? Try on the
bag. If it feels cramped under your arm and constantly
hits your breast, it's not for you.

A shoulder bag's length (where the bottom of the bag
hits your body) will accentuate whatever part of the
body it comes near.
For example, a shoulder bag that ends around the hips
will play up your hip width (the eye is drawn to the bag).

Most women look great with a bag that hits mid-torso
because it flatters the waist.
